“Re:view” is now in production

by Kyle on Sep.29, 2008, under General

Hey guys!

That’s right, the first ‘project’ – has begun.

Re:view (Review, duh!) is going to be an IPTV show based on reviewing video games. I’ll be reviewing games both old and new covering almost all platforms (excluding the PS3). Alongside that I’ll also take a look at a few homebrew/fan-made games (Sonic 2 HD is already part of the line-up).

I’ll be working on the capturing of game footage (from PC, 360, Wii etc) over the next few days trying to achieve the best possible quality available. I’ll be doing all of my editing in Adobe Premiere; aiming primarily to have the video as a YouTube Exclusive ’show’. Torrent links of far higher quality video (DivX, MP4 etc) will emerge as (or if..) demand grows!

I’ve been playing around with capture techniques and encoding with different applications/codecs and so far; this is the best I can come up with (see embedded video below). By default, YouTube displays this video in ‘blur-o-vision’. I’ve added the HD trigger to the URL and embedded a test video below for demonstration purposes. I’m aiming to improve upon this but I’m happy to settle with it for the first few episodes or so. The video is nothing special; just me dorking around on Mario Kart Wii – some footage may make it to the first episode; although it’ll have commentary over it rather than just the direct audio feed.

Let me know what you guys think; either via the comments here or the comments/rating system over at YouTube. I’d also love to hear from your experiences what video codecs/formats are YouTube friendly – it’d certainly make my day! (If you haven’t gathered it’s been quite frustrating trying many, MANY different configurations in order to achieve at least a ‘passable’ quality end result.

That aside, I’m glad that the wheels are finally in motion, lets hope this project pays off ;)

[EDIT: The HD stream no longer works, damn you YouTube! Back to the default..]

KyleWhite.net goes live!

by Kyle on Sep.26, 2008, under General

It’s back! After around 2 years of being offline – I’ve revived the domain from the dead, say hello to the all new KyleWhite.net!

It’s been a very long time since I’ve gotten into the whole blog/website thing – as I’ve never really stuck with any of the free services (Vox, MSN Spaces etc). I found that they were all quite limited. Now; I am able to customize pretty much everything, it gives me a far better sense of satisfaction. This blog is running nice & smooth thanks to GoDaddy (Linux Hosting), not to mention I’m using the most beautiful blogging software in existence (WordPress). The possibilities are wide open compared to anything I’ve previously used.

As it stands though, everything is quite temperamental. Over the coming weeks I’ll be adding widgets, changing designs, messing with scripts etc. Expect problems, the site is currently in ‘beta’ if you will.

Typically, this blog isn’t only going to contain ramblings about my everyday life, but also a place for me to post projects which I’m currently working on (video editing for example) and share my findings with you guys. Along with that I’ll hopefully be posting reviews of games, movies, equipment and lots of other stuff in general. That reminds me, I encourage you all to make use of the comments system here, as it doesn’t require membership in order to post. On sight of any spam related posts; I will embed a Captcha code into the comment system. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.. as I’m not really sure of how to do it ;)

Over the next few days I’ll explain a bit more in-depth about whats going on behind the scenes and whats to be expected in the near future. Until then, let me know how the Flickr widget works out, my first actual attempt at ‘integrating’ a widget into WordPress, or using WordPress at all actually! So please bare with me if something isn’t working, I’ll get there eventually!

Until then,

Take care.

- Kyle
